Utilize a Small Barn or Large Dog House
4
Repurpose an existing structure such as a garden shed, small barn section, or oversized dog house (giant-breed size or larger) as goat shelter. Ensure a minimum of 10-15 square feet per goat, adequate headroom for standing, and weatherproof walls and roof. Modify as needed to add ventilation openings and a rain overhang above the entrance.
Why It Works
Repurposing existing structures saves significant construction time and cost. A solid, enclosed space provides strong protection from wind, rain, and temperature extremes. With proper ventilation modifications, these structures perform as well as purpose-built goat shelters.
Tips
- Remove or cover any exposed insulation, sharp edges, or chewable materials like foam or plastic
- Ensure doorways are wide enough (at least 24 inches) so goats cannot get trapped or stuck
- Add high vents or windows near the roofline to maintain airflow without creating drafts at goat level
