Incorporate Predator Protection
4
Secure the shelter within a predator-resistant fenced area and install a lockable door or gate so goats can be closed in at night. Use welded wire or hardware cloth (not chicken wire) on any openings. In areas with coyotes, dogs, or mountain lions, lock goats inside the shelter from dusk to dawn.
Why It Works
Miniature goats are vulnerable prey animals. Most predator attacks on backyard goats occur at night. A shelter with a secure closure acts as a secondary defense behind perimeter fencing. Welded wire with openings no larger than 2x4 inches stops most predators, while chicken wire is easily torn by dogs and coyotes.
Tips
- Install a simple barrel bolt or carabiner latch -- raccoons can open basic hook-and-eye latches
- Ensure the closed shelter still has high ventilation openings covered with hardware cloth
- Consider solar-powered predator deterrent lights near the shelter as an added measure
