Provide Dry Bedding
5
Cover the shelter floor with a thick layer (4-6 inches minimum) of absorbent bedding such as straw, wood shavings, or pine pellets. Add fresh bedding on top regularly and perform full cleanouts when the base becomes saturated. In winter, the deep litter method -- adding fresh layers over old -- generates mild heat through composting.
Why It Works
Dry bedding insulates goats from cold ground, absorbs urine, and provides a clean resting surface. Damp floors promote hoof rot, internal parasites, and ammonia buildup. Straw is the most common choice because it resists compaction and provides good insulation per cost.
Tips
- Avoid cedar shavings, which contain oils that can irritate goat respiratory systems
- Check bedding moisture daily by pressing your hand into it -- if it feels damp, add a fresh layer immediately
- Plan for roughly one straw bale per goat per week during active use of the shelter
