Supplement with Goat-Specific Grain
4
Feed a commercial pelleted goat feed as a supplement based on individual needs. Lactating does typically require 1-2 lbs of grain daily, while growing kids need about 0.5-1 lb. Wethers and dry does in good condition on quality hay generally need little to no grain.
Why It Works
Grain provides concentrated energy and protein that forage alone may not supply during high-demand periods like lactation, late pregnancy, or rapid growth. Goat-specific formulas include the correct copper-to-molybdenum ratio and an ammonium chloride additive to prevent urinary calculi in males.
Tips
- Introduce or change grain amounts gradually over 7-10 days to avoid digestive upset
- Limit grain for wethers and bucks to reduce urinary calculi risk
- Store grain in sealed metal containers to prevent moisture and rodent contamination
