How do you milk a miniature goat?

Milk your doe at consistent times each day, either once daily or twice daily spaced approximately 12 hours apart. Choose a schedule you can maintain seven days a week and stick to it throughout the lactation period.

Wash your hands thoroughly before each session. Clean the doe's udder and teats with udder wash or sanitizing wipes, then dry with a clean towel. Use only sanitized pails, filters, and storage containers throughout the milking process.

Clean the udder with udder wash or wipes, then trap milk in the teat by pinching its base firmly with your thumb and forefinger. Squeeze downward with your remaining fingers in sequence to expel the milk into a clean stainless steel pail. Alternate between teats rhythmically.

Bring the doe to a designated milking area at the same time each day. Secure her on a milk stand and offer a small portion of grain or alfalfa pellets in the stand's feed trough. Speak calmly and handle her udder gently before beginning to milk.

Strain milk immediately after collection through a disposable milk filter into a sanitized container. Submerge the sealed container in an ice-water bath to cool the milk below 40°F (4°C) within 30 minutes, then transfer to the refrigerator.

Invest in a small portable goat milking machine if you milk multiple does or have limited hand strength. Set up the machine according to the manufacturer's specifications, ensuring vacuum pressure is calibrated for goats (typically 10-12 inches Hg). Clean and sanitize all components after every use.

Begin drying off approximately 2 months before the doe's next expected kidding date. Reduce milking from twice daily to once daily for 3-4 days, then to once every other day for another 3-4 days, and finally stop completely. Cut grain rations in half during this period.
