Supplement with Electric Fencing
4
Add one or two strands of electric wire or tape along the inside of your existing woven wire or panel fence. Position one strand approximately 10 inches from the ground and, if using two strands, a second at nose height (about 20 inches for miniature goats). Connect to a fence charger delivering at least 4,000 volts with proper grounding.
Why It Works
Electric wire serves as a psychological deterrent, not a physical barrier. After one or two contacts, goats learn to avoid the fence line entirely. This dramatically reduces leaning, rubbing, and climbing behavior that degrades physical fencing over time. It extends the life of your primary fence significantly.
Tips
- Never use electric fencing as the sole containment — goats will run through it when startled
- Install a proper grounding system with at least three 6-foot ground rods spaced 10 feet apart
- Check local regulations on electric fencing before installation
