Ensure Constant Access to Clean Water
5
Provide fresh, clean water in sturdy buckets or troughs at all times. Miniature goats drink 1-3 gallons per day depending on weather, lactation status, and diet moisture content. Scrub containers and replace water at least daily.
Why It Works
Water is critical for digestion, nutrient absorption, temperature regulation, and milk production. Dehydration impairs rumen function within hours and can quickly become life-threatening. Goats will refuse dirty or stale water, leading to reduced intake even when water appears available.
Tips
- Use heated buckets or tank de-icers in winter to prevent freezing
- Position water in shade during summer to keep it cool and palatable
- Elevate or secure buckets to prevent goats from tipping them over or standing in them
