Move hives to better forage area
3
Relocate your hives to a location with abundant and diverse flowering plants. Migratory beekeeping is a well-established practice used by commercial and hobbyist beekeepers alike to ensure colonies have access to adequate nutrition year-round.
Why It Works
If the area around your apiary lacks sufficient blooming plants — due to monoculture farming, urbanization, or seasonal gaps — moving hives to a forage-rich location gives colonies immediate access to natural nectar and pollen. This is often more effective than supplemental feeding because bees receive a full range of nutrients from diverse floral sources.
Tips
- Scout new locations in advance — look for diverse wildflower meadows, flowering crops, or woodland edges
- Move hives at night when all foragers are inside
- Secure hive entrances and strap boxes together for transport
- Place hives at least 5 km from the original site so foragers reorient to the new location
- Ensure landowner permission and check local regulations on hive placement
- Consider seasonal rotation between two or three sites for year-round forage
