Mesh screens

3

Utilizing fine mesh screens within the hive is a DIY approach to propolis collection that leverages bees' natural tendency to fill small openings with propolis. Beekeepers can place fine mesh screens, such as plastic canvas or hardware cloth with small openings, within the hive, often between frames or between hive bodies. Bees will often fill the mesh with propolis as they attempt to seal gaps and regulate hive environment. Once bees have filled the mesh, it can be removed, chilled to make the propolis brittle, and then flexed or scraped to harvest the propolis. This method is more efficient than simple scraping and less expensive than commercial traps, offering a balance of yield and cost-effectiveness.
