Plant bee-friendly flowers
4
Improve forage availability by planting nectar- and pollen-rich flowers, shrubs, and trees near your apiary. Choose species that bloom at staggered times — early spring through late autumn — to provide a continuous food supply throughout the foraging season.
Why It Works
Honey bees need diverse pollen sources for balanced nutrition and nectar for energy. A well-planned pollinator garden within flight range (up to 5 km) of the hive directly increases the quantity and quality of available forage, strengthening colony health and honey yields.
Tips
- Focus on proven bee plants: lavender, borage, clover, phacelia, sunflowers, and linden trees
- Plant in large patches of each species — bees forage more efficiently on dense stands
- Avoid plants treated with systemic pesticides (neonicotinoids)
- Include native wildflowers suited to your local climate and soil
- Aim for at least three species blooming in each season
