Maintain strong colonies through proactive hive management

3

Keep colonies strong and healthy through regular monitoring, effective Varroa control, and prompt removal of visibly affected brood frames. Sacbrood is often self-limiting in vigorous colonies -- most outbreaks resolve within 4-6 weeks when underlying stressors are addressed.

Why It Works

Strong colonies have enough worker bees to perform hygienic behavior at scale, removing infected larvae before the virus amplifies. Controlling Varroa mites is particularly important because Varroa destructor is a known vector for SBV and suppresses bee immune function, making colonies far more vulnerable to viral diseases.

Tips

  • Monitor Varroa levels monthly with alcohol wash or sugar roll (treat if mite load exceeds 2-3 mites per 100 bees)
  • Remove frames with heavy sacbrood infection (more than 10-15% affected cells) to reduce viral load
  • Ensure each colony has adequate space to prevent overcrowding stress
  • Combine weak colonies rather than trying to nurse multiple struggling hives individually
  • Inspect brood patterns every 2-3 weeks during active season to catch sacbrood early
