Use vertical space for chickens and goats
4
Maximize usable space by adding vertical elements. Install roosting bars at multiple heights for chickens (8-10 inches of roost space per bird) and build platforms, ramps, and climbing structures for goats. Both species naturally use vertical space and benefit from the enrichment.
Why It Works
Chickens instinctively roost off the ground at night, and higher roost positions reduce stress by satisfying their natural pecking-order behavior. Goats are natural climbers and use elevated platforms for resting, playing, and establishing herd hierarchy. Vertical structures increase the effective living area without expanding the footprint.
Tips
- Place chicken roosts higher than nesting boxes — chickens roost at the highest available point, and they will sleep in nest boxes if roosts are lower, soiling them
- Goat platforms should be stable and anchored — a toppling structure can injure animals
- Stagger roost heights by 12-18 inches so lower-ranking birds are not directly beneath higher ones
