Account for equipment space in your layout
4
When calculating total shelter space, subtract the footprint of feeders, waterers, nesting boxes, mineral feeders, and hay racks from the usable animal area. A chicken coop with four nesting boxes, a hanging feeder, and a waterer can lose 3-4 sq ft of floor space to equipment alone.
Why It Works
Animals need clear access to feed and water without competing for space or knocking into each other. Poorly placed equipment gets soiled, tipped, or blocked, leading to wasted feed, contaminated water, and animals that cannot eat or drink freely. The minimum space guidelines assume empty floor space — equipment reduces it.
Tips
- Wall-mount or hang feeders and waterers to save floor space
- Position waterers away from nesting boxes and roosts to keep water clean
- Ensure all animals can access food simultaneously — dominant animals will block feeder access if space is tight
