Provide adequate space per animal
5
Calculate the required square footage inside the shelter and in any attached runs based on species, breed, and animal count. Minimum recommendations: chickens need 4 sq ft per bird in the coop and 8-10 sq ft per bird in the run; miniature goats need 15-20 sq ft of shelter and 200+ sq ft of exercise area; rabbits need 6-8 sq ft of hutch space each.
Why It Works
Overcrowding causes stress, increases disease transmission, and triggers behavioral problems like feather picking in chickens and fighting in goats. Animals in crowded conditions also produce more concentrated waste, making odor and sanitation harder to manage.
Tips
- Always provide more space than the minimum if your area allows it
- Account for feeders, waterers, nesting boxes, and sleeping areas within the total footprint
- Bantam chickens need slightly less space; heavy breeds need slightly more
