Minimum space for chicken coops and runs
5
Plan for at least 4 sq ft of floor space per standard-sized chicken inside the coop and 8-10 sq ft per bird in the outdoor run. Bantam breeds can manage with slightly less (3 sq ft coop, 6-8 sq ft run). These are minimums — more space always produces healthier, calmer birds.
Why It Works
Overcrowded chickens develop stress behaviors like feather picking, egg eating, and aggression. Tight quarters also accelerate disease transmission and ammonia buildup. The coop provides roosting and nesting space; the run provides daytime exercise and foraging.
Tips
- Free-ranging chickens still need a secure coop for nighttime — the 4 sq ft per bird minimum still applies
- Heavy breeds (Brahma, Jersey Giant) benefit from the higher end of space recommendations
- If you cannot provide adequate run space, consider fewer birds rather than cramped conditions
