Space needs for miniature and dwarf goats

4

Provide a minimum of 15-20 sq ft of draft-free shelter space per miniature goat and at least 200-250 sq ft of outdoor exercise and browse area per animal. Standard-sized dairy or meat goats need significantly more — roughly 25-30 sq ft of shelter and 400+ sq ft of outdoor space each.

Why It Works

Goats are active, social animals that need room to move, browse, and establish a herd hierarchy without constant conflict. Inadequate space increases parasite loads because animals are forced to graze closer to their own manure. Goats are also herd animals and must be kept in pairs or groups — never alone.

Tips

  • Always keep at least two goats — a single goat will become stressed and vocal
  • More outdoor space means better natural forage and lower parasite pressure
  • Secure fencing is essential — goats are notorious escape artists and need 4-5 ft fencing minimum
