Freeze, scrape, and iron out candle wax from any surface
4
Harden spilled wax with ice so it becomes brittle, scrape off the bulk, then use a warm iron over paper towels to wick residual wax out of fabric or carpet fibers.
Steps
- Place ice cubes in a plastic bag and hold them over the wax for 5-10 minutes until the wax is fully hardened and brittle.
- Scrape the hardened wax off with a dull knife, credit card edge, or spoon. Work gently to avoid scratching the surface underneath.
- For fabric or carpet, lay several layers of paper towels or a brown paper bag over the remaining wax stain. Press a warm iron (low heat, no steam) over the paper for 10-15 seconds at a time. The heat re-melts the wax, which wicks into the paper.
- Replace the paper as it absorbs wax and repeat until no more wax transfers.
- Treat any remaining oily stain with a pre-wash stain remover on fabric, or warm soapy water on hard surfaces.
Tips
- Never use high heat or steam on the iron, which can spread the stain or damage delicate fabrics
- On hard surfaces like tile or countertops, the freeze-and-scrape step alone is usually sufficient
- Colored candle wax may leave a dye stain that requires a separate stain treatment after the wax is removed
