Loosen residual wax on wood furniture with oil

3

Apply mineral oil, furniture polish, or vegetable oil to soften wax stuck on finished wood, then wipe it clean without scratching or stripping the finish. This method is gentler than scraping and safe for most sealed wood surfaces.

Steps

  1. Scrape off as much surface wax as possible with a plastic scraper or credit card edge.
  2. Apply a small amount of mineral oil, furniture polish, or vegetable oil directly onto the remaining wax.
  3. Let the oil sit for 1-2 hours to penetrate and soften the wax bond.
  4. Wipe firmly with a soft cloth. The softened wax should lift away with the oil.
  5. Buff the area with a clean, dry cloth to restore the sheen.

Tips

  • Test the oil on an inconspicuous spot first, especially on antique or unfinished wood
  • Mineral oil is preferred over vegetable oil because it will not go rancid or leave a sticky residue
  • Follow up with your regular furniture polish to blend the treated area with the surrounding finish
