Run the oven's self-clean cycle
4
Lock the oven door and activate the self-clean function. The oven heats to 800-900°F (425-480°C) for 2-4 hours, incinerating all food residue to fine ash. Once cooled, simply wipe out the ash with a damp cloth.
Why It Works
Extreme heat carbonizes every organic deposit into powdery ash that wipes away effortlessly. No chemicals are involved — the oven's own engineering does all the work. Available on most modern electric ovens and some gas models.
Tips
- Open windows — the process produces smoke and fumes from burning residue, especially on first use or heavily soiled ovens
- Remove oven racks first (the heat can discolor and warp them)
- Never leave the house during a self-clean cycle — monitor for excessive smoke
- Some people with asthma or chemical sensitivities find the smoke irritating; ventilate well
- Not recommended for ovens with visible damage to enamel or door seals
- Avoid running self-clean the day before a big meal — if something goes wrong, you need time to troubleshoot
