Wash whites separately in hot water
5
Wash white garments in their own load using the hottest water the care labels allow — typically 130-140°F (54-60°C) for cotton basics like towels, sheets, and t-shirts. Never mix whites with colored items.
Why It Works
Hot water dissolves detergent more effectively and loosens body oils, sweat residue, and dirt that build up in white fabric fibers. Separating whites prevents dye transfer from colored items. Even trace amounts of color from mixed loads cause gradual graying over time.
Tips
- Check care labels — some white synthetics or blends need warm, not hot, water
- Wash whites after every wear to prevent buildup that leads to dinginess
- If a white item picks up color, rewash immediately in hot water before drying
