Choose a detergent formulated for whites
4
Select a detergent specifically designed for whites or one that contains oxygen bleach or optical brighteners. Products like Tide Plus Bleach Alternative, Persil ProClean, or Seventh Generation Free & Clear with OxiBoost are formulated to maintain brightness.
Why It Works
Detergents for whites contain enzymes that break down protein-based stains (sweat, food), optical brighteners that absorb UV light and re-emit blue-white light, and sometimes oxygen bleach to oxidize yellowing compounds. These ingredients work together to counteract the gradual dulling that occurs with regular washing.
Tips
- Optical brighteners make whites appear brighter under UV light but are purely cosmetic
- Enzyme-based detergents work best in warm or hot water
- Avoid using too much detergent — residue itself causes graying over time
