Line-dry whites in direct sunlight
4
After washing, hang white clothes on a clothesline or drying rack in direct sunlight rather than using a machine dryer. A few hours of strong sun noticeably brightens whites.
Why It Works
UV radiation from sunlight photochemically breaks down residual organic compounds and chromophores on fabric surfaces. This natural bleaching effect has been used for centuries and remains one of the most effective ways to maintain bright whites without chemicals.
Tips
- Works best during strong midday sun in spring and summer
- Turn items with colored trim inside out to protect non-white areas from fading
- Damp whites bleach more effectively in sunlight than fully dry ones
- This method is free and extends the life of your dryer
