Air Fresheners and Odor Neutralizers
Use commercial odor-neutralizing sprays or gel-based air fresheners designed for basements and mold-adjacent odors. Products containing enzymes or activated odor-neutralizing compounds (like OdoBan or Zep) chemically break down odor molecules rather than simply masking them with fragrance. Plug-in fresheners and scented sprays only cover up smells temporarily.
How to Use
Spray odor neutralizers directly on cleaned surfaces and into the air. Place gel-based or solid fresheners in areas with persistent odors. Reapply according to product instructions, typically every few days to weekly.
Important Warning
Air fresheners do not address the root cause of basement odors. A persistent musty smell indicates active mold growth or ongoing moisture intrusion, both of which require direct remediation. Using air fresheners without fixing the underlying problem allows mold to continue growing unseen, potentially causing structural damage and health issues. This solution should only be used after moisture and mold problems have been resolved.
