Use Petroleum Jelly

4

Petroleum jelly is a thick, long-lasting lubricant that stays in place and resists drying out. It works well on hinge pins because it clings to the metal and maintains a lubricating film for months.

Steps

  1. Close the door and tap the hinge pin upward from below using a nail and hammer
  2. Pull the pin out once it is loose
  3. Coat the pin with a thin layer of petroleum jelly
  4. Reinsert the pin and tap it back into place
  5. Open and close the door a few times to distribute the jelly

Tips

  • Removing the pin gives far better results than trying to apply jelly to an assembled hinge
  • Wipe off excess to avoid drips -- petroleum jelly can stain carpet and fabric
  • Lasts significantly longer than spray lubricants because it does not evaporate
