Graphite Powder

Graphite powder is a dry lubricant that reduces metal-on-metal friction without any liquid residue. It is especially useful in environments where wet lubricants would attract dust or where you want a completely clean application.

Steps

1. Squeeze a small puff of graphite powder into the gap at the top of each hinge knuckle
2. Open and close the door repeatedly to work the powder into the joint
3. Wipe away any excess black residue from surrounding surfaces

Why It Works

Graphite's layered molecular structure allows its sheets to slide easily over one another, providing lasting lubrication without evaporation or gumming up.

Tips

• Use sparingly -- a little goes a long way, and excess leaves visible black smudges on hands, doors, and trim
• Not ideal for exterior hinges exposed to rain, since water can wash the powder away
• Often sold as lock lubricant -- the same product works for hinges
