Apply Window Film
4
Window insulation film creates a transparent additional barrier over the glass, effectively adding a dead-air space that mimics the insulating effect of double-pane glass. Shrink-fit window film kits (such as 3M Indoor Window Insulator) cost $3-8 per window and can reduce heat loss through single-pane windows by up to 50%. The film is applied to the window frame with double-sided tape and then shrunk tight with a hair dryer, creating a taut, nearly invisible surface.
How to Apply
- Clean the window frame and glass thoroughly so the adhesive tape bonds properly.
- Apply the double-sided tape around the perimeter of the window frame (not on the glass).
- Press the film onto the tape, starting at the top and working downward, leaving slight slack.
- Use a hair dryer on a medium setting, holding it 2-3 inches from the film. Move slowly across the surface until the film shrinks tight and all wrinkles disappear.
- Trim any excess film with a utility knife or scissors.
When to Use
- Best for single-pane windows where the budget does not allow replacement with double-pane units
- Ideal as a seasonal winterization measure applied in autumn and removed in spring
- Useful on windows that do not need to be opened during winter months
Tips
- The film will prevent you from opening the window, so only apply it to windows you will not need to use during cold months
- Low-E window film (a permanent product) can be applied directly to the glass for year-round energy savings without blocking the window
- On double-pane windows that have lost their seal (foggy between panes), film provides a temporary fix while you plan replacement
