Wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors
4
What to Do
Wear wraparound sunglasses or close-fitting glasses whenever you are outdoors during allergy season. This creates a physical barrier that reduces pollen contact with your eyes.
Why It Works
Pollen grains are 10-100 microns and travel on wind currents. Wraparound frames block pollen from reaching the eye surface from the sides, where standard glasses leave gaps. Reducing the amount of pollen that contacts your eyes means less histamine release and fewer symptoms.
Tips
- Polarized lenses reduce glare and provide UV protection as a bonus
- Regular prescription glasses provide some protection but leave side gaps
- Clean glasses with water when you come indoors to remove settled pollen
- Especially important on windy, high-pollen-count days
