Consider spore-based probiotics for stability
3
If refrigeration or travel is a concern, consider spore-forming Bacillus species (B. subtilis, B. coagulans, B. clausii). These survive stomach acid, heat, and storage without refrigeration.
Why It Works
Spore-based probiotics form a protective endospore shell that resists gastric acid, bile salts, and harsh environmental conditions. Once they reach the intestine, they germinate and become metabolically active. Some B. coagulans strains have improved IBS symptoms in clinical trials, and Bacillus species support SCFA production.
Tips
- Evidence is growing but less extensive than for Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains
- Ideal for travelers or people without access to refrigerated supplements
- Sometimes marketed as "soil-based organisms" (SBOs) — same category
- MegaSporeBiotic and Just Thrive are popular spore-based brands
