Expect seasonal laying (Spring)
5
Plan your egg collection around the natural goose laying season, which runs from February through June in the Northern Hemisphere. Unlike chickens, geese do not lay year-round. Most breeds begin when daylight reaches 10+ hours and taper off by early summer.
Why It Works
Increasing daylight triggers hormonal changes that activate the reproductive cycle in geese. This photoperiod response is hardwired and varies slightly by breed and latitude, but the late-winter-to-spring window is consistent across domestic breeds.
Tips
- Chinese geese often have a longer laying season than heavier breeds like Embden or Toulouse
- Mark your calendar for February to start checking nests daily
- First-year geese may start laying later in the season than mature birds
