Ensure good nutrition and light
4
Switch geese to a waterfowl layer feed (16-18% protein) starting 2-4 weeks before the expected laying season. Supplement with crushed oyster shell for calcium and ensure access to natural daylight for at least 10 hours per day.
Why It Works
Egg formation demands significant protein and calcium. A single goose egg shell requires about 4-5 g of calcium. Natural daylight cycles regulate the hormones (FSH and LH) that trigger ovulation. Proper nutrition paired with adequate light duration maximizes egg production within each goose's genetic potential.
Tips
- Offer oyster shell free-choice in a separate dish rather than mixing it into feed
- Avoid artificial lighting to extend laying seasons, as it stresses birds and reduces long-term productivity
- Fresh pasture grazing supplements commercial feed with vitamins A and E
