Use Enclosed Housing Designs
3
Build or buy quail housing with solid walls on three sides instead of fully open wire cages. Use plywood, OSB, or insulated panels for the walls and keep only the front or one side as wire mesh for ventilation and light.
Why It Works
Open wire cages allow sound to radiate in all directions. Solid walls absorb and reflect sound back into the enclosure, reducing noise transmission to the surrounding area. A three-sided solid enclosure can reduce perceived noise by 10–15 dB compared to an all-wire cage, which is a substantial difference.
Tips
- Ensure at least one full side is ventilated mesh to prevent ammonia buildup and overheating
- Adding acoustic foam or old carpet to the interior of solid walls increases sound dampening
- Face the open/mesh side away from neighbors for maximum noise reduction in their direction
