Use Medicated Feed for Coccidiosis Prevention

3

Use a medicated game bird starter feed containing a coccidiostat (such as Amprolium) for chicks during the first 6-8 weeks, particularly if Coccidiosis has occurred in your flock before. Transition to non-medicated grower or layer feed once birds mature and develop natural immunity.

Why It Works

Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria parasites, is one of the leading killers of young quail. It damages the intestinal lining, causing bloody droppings, weight loss, and death within days. Amprolium in medicated feed blocks thiamine uptake by the parasite, suppressing reproduction while allowing chicks to develop gradual immunity through low-level exposure. This is a targeted, well-established preventive approach for young birds.

Tips

  • Do not feed medicated feed to laying hens producing eggs for human consumption — check withdrawal periods on the label
  • Combine medicated feed with good sanitation rather than relying on medication alone
  • Consult an avian veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment if you see bloody droppings in your flock
