Minimize Stress and Disturbances
4
Maintain a calm, predictable environment for your quail flock. Avoid loud noises, frequent handling, sudden routine changes, and exposure to predators. Keep the housing area in a low-traffic zone and establish a consistent daily schedule for feeding and maintenance.
Why It Works
Stress triggers cortisol release in quails, which suppresses reproductive hormones and halts ovulation. Even a single predator scare or aggressive cage mate can stop a hen from laying for days. Coturnix quails are particularly sensitive to environmental changes compared to chickens, making routine and security critical to sustained production.
Tips
- Remove aggressive birds promptly — a single bully can suppress laying across the entire cage
- Handle birds gently and only when necessary, such as during health checks
- Cover part of the enclosure to provide a retreat area where birds feel secure
