Replace Older Hens
4
Cycle out hens older than 10-12 months for maximum egg yield. Coturnix quail reach peak production at 8-10 weeks of age and maintain strong output through their first year. After 12 months, production drops noticeably. Plan replacement flocks by hatching or purchasing new birds before retiring older hens.
Why It Works
Coturnix quail have a short but intense laying lifespan. A healthy hen in her first year can produce 250-300 eggs annually. After 12-18 months, hormonal changes reduce laying frequency to roughly half that rate. Unlike chickens that may lay productively for 2-3 years, quail decline much faster, making flock rotation essential for consistent output.
Tips
- Stagger hatching schedules so replacement pullets are ready before older hens decline
- Retired hens can still lay sporadically and may be kept if space allows
- Track hatch dates for each bird to time replacements accurately
