Check Water Availability

5

Ensure quails have constant access to fresh, clean water by checking waterers at least twice daily. Even a few hours without water can cause hens to stop laying for several days or trigger a premature molt. In hot weather, water consumption increases significantly and containers empty faster.

Why It Works

Quail eggs are approximately 75% water by weight. A laying hen requires consistent hydration to form eggs — dehydration halts ovulation rapidly because the body prioritizes survival over reproduction. Unlike feed deprivation, which takes days to affect laying, water deprivation impacts egg production within hours.

Tips

  • Use nipple waterers to keep water clean and reduce contamination from bedding or droppings
  • In summer, check water levels morning and evening as a minimum
  • Add a second waterer as backup in case the primary one fails or gets blocked
