Ensure Adequate Space and Clean Housing

Provide at least 1 square foot of floor space per bird and keep housing clean and dry. Overcrowded or unsanitary conditions are among the most common causes of reduced egg production in backyard quail flocks. Clean dropping trays and replace bedding regularly to prevent ammonia buildup.

Why It Works

Overcrowding causes chronic stress and increases competition for food and water, both of which suppress laying. Dirty conditions promote respiratory infections and parasites that divert a hen's energy away from egg production. Ammonia from accumulated droppings irritates airways at concentrations as low as 25 ppm, further reducing output.

Tips

• Wire floors with removable dropping trays simplify cleaning and keep birds dry
• Clean trays at least every 2-3 days in warm weather to control ammonia
