Select Coturnix Quail for Eggs and Fast Growth
5
Choose Coturnix quail (Japanese quail) as your primary breed for backyard egg and meat production. Coturnix mature at 6 to 8 weeks, begin laying at that age, and produce 200 to 300 eggs per year. Standard varieties reach harvest weight around 8 to 10 weeks. Common strains include Pharaoh, Tuxedo, and Golden.
Why It Works
Coturnix have been domesticated for over a thousand years, bred specifically for confinement productivity. Their fast maturation cycle means you get eggs within two months of hatching, and their compact size keeps feed costs low at roughly 20 to 25 grams of feed per bird per day. They tolerate cage environments well and rarely exhibit the stress behaviors seen in wild-type quail species.
Tips
- Start with 10 to 20 birds from a reputable hatchery to establish a productive flock
- Provide 14 to 16 hours of light daily to maintain consistent egg production year-round
- Keep males and females at a 1:3 to 1:5 ratio if breeding, or keep hens only for unfertilized eggs
