Use Fresh, Clean, Well-Stored Eggs
4
Select eggs that are less than 7 days old, clean but unwashed, uniform in size, and free of cracks or deformities. Store them pointed-end down at 50-60°F (10-15°C) with 70-75% ambient humidity until ready to incubate.
Why It Works
Fertility declines roughly 1-2% per day after laying. Washing removes the protective bloom (cuticle) that seals the shell pores against bacteria. Storing pointed-end down keeps the air cell at the blunt end properly positioned for embryo development. Eggs stored above 75°F can begin premature, uneven development.
Tips
- Collect eggs at least twice daily to minimize contamination and temperature exposure.
- Discard eggs with hairline cracks, rough shells, or unusual shapes -- these have significantly lower hatch rates.
- If storing longer than 3 days, tilt the storage carton daily to prevent yolk adhesion.
