Build a Ground-Level Quail Tractor
3
Construct a movable bottomless pen from wood framing and 1/2" hardware cloth that sits directly on grass. Size it at roughly 4 ft x 8 ft for 8-12 quail. Move the tractor to fresh ground every 1-2 days to prevent soil contamination and give birds access to insects and greens.
Why It Works
Direct ground contact allows natural foraging behavior, supplementing feed with insects, seeds, and fresh vegetation. Regular relocation prevents parasite buildup and distributes droppings as fertilizer across the yard. Quail kept on ground tractors show reduced stress compared to wire-only setups.
Tips
- Bury a wire apron 6-8 inches outward around the base or add a wire floor skirt to stop digging predators
- Add a solid-roofed shelter section covering at least one-third of the tractor for rain and sun protection
- Avoid use in very wet or freezing conditions, as standing water and mud increase disease risk
