Ensure Constant Access to Fresh Water
5
Provide clean, fresh water at all times using waterers designed to prevent contamination from droppings and bedding. Quail dehydrate quickly, especially in warm weather, and even short interruptions in water access reduce egg production and can cause health problems.
Why It Works
Water is essential for digestion, nutrient absorption, temperature regulation, and egg formation. A laying quail hen drinks roughly 40-60 ml of water per day — about double her feed intake by volume. Dehydration leads to reduced feed consumption, dropped egg production, and increased susceptibility to heat stress.
Tips
- Nipple drinkers or cup waterers work best for caged quail, minimizing contamination
- Clean waterers at least every 2 days; daily in warm weather
- In freezing conditions, check water multiple times daily or use a heated base to prevent ice formation
