Ensure Good Ventilation

4

Design or modify quail housing to allow continuous airflow without creating direct drafts on the birds. Position vents or openings near the roofline to let warm, moist air escape while keeping incoming air above bird level. In enclosed or indoor setups, install a small exhaust fan on a timer or thermostat.

Why It Works

Stagnant air traps ammonia from droppings and excess moisture from respiration and waterers. Ammonia concentrations above 25 ppm damage quail respiratory tracts, making birds vulnerable to infections like Mycoplasma and Aspergillosis. Proper ventilation keeps ammonia and humidity low, creating an environment where respiratory pathogens cannot easily establish.

Tips

  • Aim for humidity between 40-60% inside the enclosure — use a hygrometer to monitor
  • Place vents on opposite walls to create cross-ventilation without ground-level drafts
  • In winter, reduce vent size rather than closing them entirely — ventilation is critical year-round
