Make flavored syrups at home for pennies
4
Combine 1 cup sugar with 1 cup water in a saucepan, heat until dissolved, and add flavorings: vanilla (1 tbsp extract), caramel (cook sugar to amber before adding water), lavender (steep 2 tbsp dried lavender 10 minutes then strain), or cinnamon (2 sticks simmered 10 minutes).
Why It Works
Cafe flavored drinks use pumps of syrup that cost pennies per serving but get marked up enormously. Homemade syrups taste better than commercial ones, use natural ingredients, and cost a fraction of what Torani or Monin bottles cost.
Tips
- Store in a glass bottle in the fridge for 2-4 weeks
- 1-2 tbsp of syrup per drink is equivalent to 1-2 pumps at a coffee shop
- For sugar-free versions, substitute with monk fruit or allulose sweetener
- Seasonal syrups: pumpkin spice (fall), peppermint (winter), lavender (spring), peach (summer)
