Consider Supplements (Use Sparingly)
3
Add dietary supplements only when a specific nutritional gap exists, such as increased energy demands during lactation or conditioning for show. Black oil sunflower seeds (BOSS) and whole oats are the most commonly used supplements among breeders.
Why It Works
BOSS provides roughly 28% fat and supports coat condition and caloric intake for lactating does burning extra energy. Whole oats offer digestible carbohydrates for weight gain in underweight rabbits. Used in moderation, these supplements address targeted deficiencies without disrupting the balanced nutrition in commercial pellets.
Tips
- Limit BOSS to 1 teaspoon per rabbit per day; excessive fat causes liver problems
- Offer oats at no more than 1 tablespoon daily to avoid obesity and cecal dysbiosis
- Consult experienced breeders or a rabbit-savvy veterinarian before adding any supplement to the diet
