Cage Size: Breeding Does/Bucks (Medium Breeds)

5

Provide individual cages measuring at least 30" x 36" (76 cm x 91 cm) for breeding does and bucks of medium breeds such as New Zealand Whites or Californians. This gives roughly 7.5 sq ft (0.7 sq m) of floor space per animal. Does need room for a nest box during kindling, while bucks need enough space to move comfortably between feeding and resting areas.

Why It Works

Medium-breed rabbits reach 9-12 lb (4-5.5 kg) at maturity. At 7.5 sq ft, the animal can fully stretch out, turn around, and hop a short distance -- meeting minimum welfare thresholds recommended by university extension programs. Separating breeding stock in individual cages also prevents injuries from territorial aggression.

Tips

  • Larger breeds like Flemish Giants need bigger cages, at least 36" x 48" (9-12 sq ft)
  • Minimum cage height should be 18" (45 cm) so the rabbit can sit upright on its haunches
  • Mount feeders and waterers externally to preserve usable floor space
