Space for Feeders, Waterers, Nest Boxes
4
Account for the footprint of feeders, waterers, and nest boxes when calculating usable living space. A standard nest box for medium breeds measures roughly 10" x 18" and occupies about 1.25 sq ft of floor space. The key metric is the remaining space available to the rabbit after equipment is placed.
Why It Works
Rabbits need unobstructed floor area to move, rest, and stretch. If equipment takes up a large portion of the cage, the advertised cage dimensions overstate the actual living space. Calculating net usable area ensures the rabbit meets minimum space thresholds regardless of equipment layout.
Tips
- Mount feeders and waterers on the cage exterior to free up internal floor space
- Use J-style feeders that attach to the cage wall and protrude inward only 2-3 inches
- Remove nest boxes 18-21 days after kindling to restore full cage space for the doe and growing kits
