Avoid Harmful Foods
5
Eliminate all known toxic and harmful foods from the rabbit's environment. Keep a reference list of unsafe foods posted near the feeding area so all caretakers follow the same rules consistently.
Why It Works
Rabbits have a sensitive cecal digestive system that cannot handle high-sugar, high-starch, or toxic compounds. Chocolate contains theobromine, avocado contains persin, and rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid -- all of which can cause organ damage or death even in small amounts.
Tips
- Never feed bread, crackers, cookies, cereals, nuts, beans, chocolate, avocado, or rhubarb leaves
- Fruit should be given rarely and in tiny amounts (a teaspoon per 2 kg body weight) due to high sugar content
- If a rabbit ingests a toxic food, contact a rabbit-experienced veterinarian immediately
