Use Cattle or Hog Panels
5
Build your goat enclosure with rigid cattle or hog panels — welded steel grids typically sold in 16-foot lengths at approximately 50 inches tall. Fasten them securely to wooden or T-posts using panel clips or heavy-gauge wire. For miniature goats, hog panels with their smaller lower grid openings (2x4 inches) are preferable to cattle panels.
Why It Works
Welded steel panels provide superior rigidity compared to woven wire. Goats cannot push through, climb, or deform them. The small grid pattern prevents head entrapment and kid escapes. Panels typically last 20+ years with minimal maintenance, making them the most durable fencing option available.
Tips
- Overlap adjacent panels by one grid square and wire them together to eliminate gaps
- Budget approximately $25-$40 per 16-foot panel — more expensive per foot than woven wire but far more durable
- Combine with wooden corner and gate posts for maximum structural integrity
