Secure Gates Properly
5
Install metal or heavy wooden gates that match your fence height and use goat-proof latches on every gate. Ensure gates hang level with less than 3 inches of ground clearance and fit snugly against the fence posts when closed. Use two-stage latches that require both lifting and sliding to open.
Why It Works
Gates are the most common escape point in goat enclosures. Goats are intelligent and dexterous — they can lift simple hook latches with their lips and push open unlatched gates within minutes. A two-stage latch mechanism defeats their manipulation ability while remaining easy for humans to operate.
Tips
- Add a carabiner clip or snap bolt as a secondary lock on every gate for extra security
- Check gate swing clearance seasonally — ground heave and settling can create gaps underneath
- Install chain gate-closers or spring hinges so gates cannot be left accidentally open
