Ensure Adequate Fence Height
5
Build all perimeter fencing to a minimum of 4 feet (48 inches), with 5 feet (60 inches) strongly recommended. Miniature goat breeds like Nigerian Dwarfs and Pygmies can clear a 3-foot fence from a standing start. Measure effective height from the ground on the goat side, accounting for any terrain slope or grade changes.
Why It Works
Miniature goats are agile jumpers and determined climbers despite their small size. A Nigerian Dwarf can jump 4 feet when motivated. The extra foot of height at 5 feet provides a meaningful safety margin that accounts for uneven terrain, snow accumulation, and objects near the fence line that goats could use as launch points.
Tips
- Remove stumps, rocks, feeders, and shelter roofs within 4 feet of the fence line — goats will use them as stepping stones
- On sloped terrain, measure fence height from the uphill side where goats will stand
- If using 4-foot fencing, adding a single electric wire at the top adds effective deterrence at low cost
