Provide Minimum Shelter Space
5
Allocate 10-15 square feet of dry, draft-free indoor shelter space per miniature goat. Use a barn, shed, or large insulated structure with proper ventilation to prevent ammonia buildup and respiratory disease.
Why It Works
Adequate indoor space lets each goat lie down, move freely, and retreat from herd pressure. Protection from rain, snow, wind, and extreme sun reduces stress and illness. Good airflow prevents moisture accumulation that leads to pneumonia and hoof rot.
Tips
- Add 4-6 inches of straw or wood shaving bedding and refresh weekly to keep floors dry
- Increase space allowance in cold climates where goats spend extended periods indoors
- Position shelter openings away from prevailing winds while maintaining cross-ventilation
